Transferring credits

If you decide to switch universities during your academic career, we want to help you build your future without losing the progress you’ve made. Whether you’re looking to transfer your academic credits from another institution to MIU or vice versa, here’s the process to follow.

Equivalency

In order for a course from another institution to be recognized by MIU, approximately 75% of the course content must coincide with a course offered by MIU.

As for transferring credits from MIU to another institution, the same criterion (75% equivalence between the two courses) is often required.

The recognition of credits is always at the discretion of the institution that would be receiving the transferred credits.

Evaluation

MIU will evaluate the content of the course to determine the level of equivalence. For this evaluation, the student must submit a copy of their transcript from the other institution. The student may also be asked to provide additional documentation, such as examples of their coursework.

MIU will consider both the course description and the institution’s academic catalog during the evaluation. Each evaluation will be carried out on a case-by-case basis.

MIU may accept credits awarded by accredited higher education institutions and will not accept course credits from any institution below university level.

Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must undergo a credential evaluation by a member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE) or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) before the student asks for any credits to be recognized. MIU will provide assistance and guidance to international students throughout this process.

Process

Only students who have gained admission to MIU can submit their transcripts and course descriptions for consideration. Credit transfer decisions are not always made before a student enrolls.

Students are urged to submit official transcripts for evaluation before the beginning of the semester to ensure timely processing.

The credit recognition evaluation will be carried out by the associate dean. In some situations, the associate dean may seek input from an expert or faculty member in a specific field during the evaluation process.

Transferred credits

The grades for courses transferred from other universities will appear as “TR” on the student’s transcript, and will not be included in the calculation of their grade point average.

For undergraduate students, transferred credits can account for no more than 75% of the total program requirements. For graduate students, transferred credits can account for no more than 50% of the total program requirements.
